I often get asked how I write difficult, mature subject matter for children - it’s something I still have to fight for today. Children are not exempt from the world’s barbarity, more often than not, they are the ones most vulnerable and victim to it. I wrote an article for nerd daily about the delicate balance required to write for children, and how this becomes an exquisite challenge as opposed to burden xx 🫶

Now that the dust has settled and it’s International Children’s Book Day, I thought I’d make a post in honour of my readers, the people I wrote this book for who have wholeheartedly welcomed and supported it. 💜

When I wrote NURA, it was my way of reaching back to a culture I’ve spent much of my life trying to disguise. So instead, I used this novel to celebrate it, to show the world all the beauty and life in South Asian and Pakistani culture. Some of my most voracious readers have been young Pakistani kids, and seeing the light in their eyes sparkle when they found something they relate to makes me feel like I’ve done something right in the world.

And to every Muslim out there who struggles with feeling properly seen, I wanted to write Muslim kids just being themselves, maneuvering through life like anybody else. We aren’t weird, strange, or whatever else people want to label us as. We’re just people.

So many of you all have left me kind and thoughtful messages, and I’m so grateful for them. Even if I don’t respond, I try to read as many as I can!! So thank you 💜💜
